- Dean's List
To qualify for the Dean's List a student must earn a semester GPA of at least a 3.67.
2006-07 Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarships
The Sullivan Scholarships allow outstanding U students to enhance their education with a fifth year of undergraduate study overseas. Three Honors-CLA students received the scholarship for 2006-07. Elizabeth (Betsy) Burr (anthropology major, art minor) will conduct a year of directed field research in South Africa. Mark Foster (acting and anthropology major, political science minor) will study Swahili and other subjects at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, during the fall semester, and will conduct independent research at the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania's Gombe National Park during the spring. Theodore (Ted) Meinhover (global studies major, mass communication minor) intends to study Chinese and Bahasa languages and cultures by spending a semester at the University of Indonesia in Depok followed by a semester at Yunnan University in Kunming, China.
Truman Scholarships
Two CLA Honors students, Rebecca Lynn Mitchell and Joseph Hartman Walla, have been named 2006 Harry S. Truman Scholars. The scholarship provides up to $30,000 for graduate or professional school, and carries a service commitment. Walla is also the recipient of another prestigious award, the Henry Luce Foundation Scholarship.
Luce Scholarship
CLA honors student Joseph Walla (political science) has been selected as one of only 18 Luce Scholars in the nation. Walla won the Luce Scholarship for a professional internship experience in Asia, which will begin in September and continue through July 2007.
Rhodes Scholarship
Diana Fu, an honors student in CLA, was named a 2006 Rhodes Scholar. Fu, who is majoring in global studies and political science, will graduate summa cum laude in May 2006. CLA has had three Rhodes Scholars in the past six years. Read the news release for more information about CLA's newest Rhodes Scholar.
Fullbright Scholarships
The Fulbright Program, an international educational exchange program, is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Three current CLA students have received this award: Jane DeRonne, a graduate student in communication studies, will assist in teaching English and American studies to German high school students in Hamburg. Jennifer Illuzzi, a doctoral student in history, will focus her research on the history of Gypsies and their interactions with national and local authorities and communities in Italy during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Lynne Newton, a doctoral student in anthropology, will spend 2005-06 in Oman. Her research will focus on religious pilgrimage and trade in southern Arabia.
Bush Fellowship Award
MFA student Cheri Johnson received a $44,000 Bush Fellowship for her writing. Johnson plans to continue working on her collection of short stories. This is the first time an MFA has won this prestigious award.
Prague Summer Program Fellowship
MFA student Nicole Johns received one of only four Prague Summer Program Fellowships. She will have a full monetary scholarship to study in Prague this summer. This is the first time an MFA has received one of the four fellowships.
President's Student Leadership and Service Award
Eighteen College of Liberal Arts students received the 2005 President's Student Leadership and Service Award for their amazing contributions to our community. The following CLA undergraduates received this award: Annie Davidson, Lindsey Fritsch, Mukhtar Gaaddasaar, Molly Gale, Bridgette Goulet, Sarah Hesser, Morgan Kingstedt, Sumaiya Mamdani, Jessica Mann, Erika Meyer, Quynh Nguyen, Lorien Olive, Natalie Olson, Chris Oudavanh, Amy Pierce, Andrew Pierce, Elana Sondel, and Abby Weinandt.
2005-06 Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarship for Study Abroad
Christopher Gregory (Asian languages and literatures and theatre arts major, CLA) will study in Japan during the 2005–06 academic year. Rebecca Vanasek (individually designed interdepartmental major, CLA) will study in South Africa during the 2005–06 academic year.
