IHRC Website Selected as Encyclopedia Britannica iGuide
Transcript
[Announcer]: I’m Rick Moore with the University of Minnesota Moments. The Encyclopedia Britannica has selected the Web site of the U's Immigration History Research Center, IHRC in short, as a Britannica iGuide site, and will present the Web site as a recommended resource for its online readers. Donna Gabaccia, the center's director, says the IHRC has one of the largest and most important collections of materials on U.S. immigration and refugee life in the world.
[Gabaccia]: There’s relatively few University based websites that deal with issues related to immigration; we’re really pleased to know that Britannica thinks ours is one of the best ones. It means that when a user looks up any article related to immigration in Britannica, they’ll find a list of website links and ours is number one on that list. It’s really exiting to be in that position.
[Moore]: Gabaccia says that the IHRC offers a historical and scholarly perspective on a subject that is often debated in a heated and emotional manner.
[Gabaccia]: Obviously, yes, last year immigration was a hot issue and I think it could remain a hot issue for the next two years or so, but we’re there to remind people that immigration has a long history in the United States, that the United States not the only place that immigrants had to, and we try to sponsor events and encourage discussion that take those more global and historical and cross-cultural comparisons into account.
[Moore]: That’s Donna Cabaccia for the University of Minnesota Moments.
