The University of Minnesota invites applications and nominations for the position of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
The University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts, committed to excellence in research and teaching, has 30 departments and several centers and interdisciplinary research programs in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. It is home to over 570 faculty, including award-winning scholars and artists who engage in distinguished teaching, ground breaking research, and innovative, creative expression. The breadth of faculty expertise, spanning more than 65 majors and over 70 minors, provides opportunity for an enormous range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary studies for our 16,400 students. The Dean should have a strong vision and extraordinary leadership skills that will enable the College of Liberal Arts to continue its path to becoming one of the top liberal arts colleges in a public research university. The Dean is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The Dean is responsible for leading the creation of a vision for the college, and must have a proven record of management, and the ability to develop the strategies and resources necessary to realize that vision.
Duties:
The Dean will:
- Provide exceptional strategic leadership for the continual advancement of the quality, reputation, and direction of the College of Liberal Arts
- Administer the activities of the college, including appointments, budget, and fellowships
- Plan, evaluate, and provide oversight of programs with the faculty, and with the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
- Work cooperatively with the campus-wide honors program, international programs, diversity initiatives, undergraduate admissions, student services, interdisciplinary research centers, collaborative academic and creative programs, and with the Graduate School
- Serve as an advocate for the continual improvement of the student experience within the College of Liberal Arts
- Aggressively recruit and retain distinguished scholars and artists through broad, proactive searches that seek diverse and outstanding candidates
- Lead a major part of the University’s upcoming capital campaign
Qualifications:
The successful candidate should have:
- An earned doctorate or requisite terminal degree in the applicant’s area of study
- A record of teaching and scholarship/artistic activity commensurate with appointment as a tenured full professor in a department at the University of Minnesota
- A demonstrated record of effective, innovative, and collaborative leadership in higher education
- A strong commitment to academic excellence and to high academic standards
- A demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies such as faculty and student governance organizations, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other internal and external groups
- Significant experience as an effective administrator and fiscal manager that includes supervision of staff in complex organizations within higher education;
- Commitment to the mission of a land-grant university in a vital, urban environment
- A demonstrated record of adopting and practicing principles beneficial to diversity in the student body and workforce
