School of Music Names New Director
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 7/17/2008 ) -- Dr. David Myers, currently pro
fessor in the School of Music at Georgia State University, Georgia, has been named director of the School of Music at the University of Minnesota. Myers' appointment becomes effective September 29, 2008.
"Dr. Myers is an outstanding leader with broad administrative experience, both nationally and internationally. His visionary ideas about music education and the relationship between music, the arts, and society will greatly strengthen the school and enrich its relationship to our community, our nation, and the world," said James A. Parente, Jr., interim dean of the College of Liberal Arts. Read more
Three CLA Scholars Named Regents Professors
MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL ( 6/25/2008 ) -- Three College of Liberal Arts professors have been named Regents Professors by the university's Board of Regents. The designation is the highest level of recognition given to faculty by the university.
They are history professor Steven Ruggles, geography professor Eric Sheppard, and English professor Madelon Sprengnether. Physics professor Allen Goldman was also named as a Regents Professor. Read more
University of Minnesota Professor Emeritus and Nobel Laureate Leonid Hurwicz Passes Away

It is with great sadness that we announce that Leo Hurwicz, recipient of the 2007 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science and a University of Minnesota Regents Professor Emeritus, died peacefully of natural causes on Tuesday, June 24.
The Hurwicz family has asked that memorials be made to the Leonid Hurwicz Fellowship Fund. Read more
