Anthropology Student First at U to Win Beinecke
Honors student Sarah J. Hampton (junior, anthropology) was awarded the 2006 Beinecke Scholarship. Hampton is the first University of Minnesota student to win this prestigious national award, and is one of only five 2006 Beinecke Scholars selected from public institutions.
Hampton—whose areas of interest include biological anthropology, paleoanthropology, and taphonomy—has participated in numerous research projects under the direction of University faculty. Last summer, she was a research assistant to associate anthropology professor Martha Tappen at the ancient homonid site of Dmanisi in the Republic of Georgia.
This summer, with the support of an Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program grant, she will study faunal remains at the medieval site of Tulsk, Ireland, with John Soderberg (Ph.D. ’03, anthropology).
Hampton volunteers at the Raptor Center and works at the University’s Law Library. She has received a Selmer Birkelo Scholarship and the Elden Johnson Memorial award for best undergraduate archaeological research paper.
