CLA Alumni Volunteer Initiatives

CLA Alumni Society volunteers help with such things as outreach, academic department events on campus, student recruitment, and mentoring. The following are examples of where you can get involved!

CLA Alumni Society Board of Directors — Whether as a member of the board or one of its committees, you can help this group of alumni and friends in planning and implementing events and programs for parents, students, faculty, staff, friends and alumni of CLA.

Band or School of Journalism & Mass Communication Alumni — UMAA-sponsored societies for University Band and J-School alumni offer additional opportunities to stay involved with CLA and the University.

Alumni Legislative Network State Capitol— Partnering with UMAA's Legislative Network, we encourage you to contact your state legislators to build support for CLA and the University of Minnesota. Please visit the U of M Government Relations website for information about how you can voice your support.

Alumni Chapters — You can stay connected with the University of Minnesota through alumni chapters across Minnesota, the United States, and around the world! Connect with alumni beyond the Twin Cities through service, social, and educational activities. Help generate pride and support of the University of Minnesota wherever you live!

Alumni Admissions Program — Join in the effort to promote CLA and the University of Minnesota to high school students in Minnesota and across the country.

CLA's Career and Community Learning Center (CCLC) — In addition to its role with the CLA Mentor Program, CCLC offers the following opportunities for alumni involvement:

  • Participate in mock or informational interviews with students who are beginning a job search either over the phone or at your office.
  • Serve on a panel for periodic information sessions entitled "What can I do with a Major in...?" - Current students completing liberal arts majors can greatly benefit from your career advice.
  • Offer internships at your workplace. Thousands of CLA students have worked as interns in government, non-profits, small companies, high-tech firms, and major multi-national corporations. If your company already has a program set up or if you would like to start one, call CCLC at (612) 624-7577.

CLA alum Dan MacLaughlin talks to CLA student Lauren Kruger at the CCLC Graduate and Professional School Day.CLA alumni and other community members have also served in advisory roles: on the Dean's Business Advisory Council, the CLA Alumni Board, the Capital Campaign Committee, and on the advisory committees of individual academic departments.
