COLLEGE NEWS

The Mullen/Spector/Truax Women's Leadership Award
Shirley Nelson Garner (professor, English; associate dean, Graduate School) received the Mullen, Spector, Truax Women's Leadership Award for 2006-07. The award is given annually to a faculty or staff woman at the University who has made outstanding contributions to women's leadership development. This award is intended not only for women who are leaders, but for women who have developed leadership within others.


KUDOS

John Archer (cultural studies and comparative literature) received the 2007 Society of Architectural Historians' Alice Davis Hitchcock Award for his book "Architecture and Suburbia: From English Villa to American Dream House."

Irving Gottesman (psychiatry; psychology) was awarded the American Psychological Foundation's Gold Medal Award. This award was given for his extraordinary impact on the field both through conceptual innovations and empirical work.

Gordon Legge (psychology) received funding from NIH, "Designing Visually Accessible Spaces."

Mark Snyder (psychology) was awarded the 2007 International Society for the Study of Self and Identity Lifetime Career Award. This award is given to a researcher who has made a sustained contribution to our understanding of self and identity throughout his or her academic career.

Joe Rausch (psychology) was awarded the 2007 Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Graduate School Award in Social Sciences from the University of Notre Dame. This award was given for his exemplary research and teaching activities as a graduate student.

Brian Southwell (journalism and mass communication) and Marco Yzer (journalism and mass communication) were invited to join the editorial board of Health Communication, a journal focused on the intersection of communication and public health. Southwell was also appointed to the editorial board of Communication Research, a top journal in communication.

Andrew Staupe (masters of music candidate, piano performance) won fourth prize at the 2007 Corpus Christi National Competition. Staupe studies with Lydia Artymiw (music).

Elaine Tarone (English as a second language) received grant funding from the University of Auckland to lecture and consult for the Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics. During her short stay, Tarone gave a public lecture on her collaborative research with Martha Bigelow (second languages and cultures education in curriculum and instruction) on literacy and oral second language acquisition, and gave the inaugural plenary address for a major international conference, "Social and Cognitive Aspects of Second Language Learning and Teaching."

American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship Competition
The American Institute of Indian Studies invites applications from scholars from all disciplines who wish to conduct their research in India. Junior fellowships are given to doctoral candidates to conduct research for their dissertations in India for up to eleven months. Senior long-term (six to nine months) and short-term (four months or less) fellowships are available for scholars who hold the Ph.D. degree. Scholarly/Professional development fellowships are available to scholars and professionals who have not previously worked in India. Application deadline is July 1, 2007.
