Academic Recruitment and Hiring
General Principles and Objectives
Diversity and Excellence in Recruitment
Academic searches in the College of Liberal Arts are conducted in accordance with the University’s Administrative Policy Recruitment and Selection of Faculty and Academic Professional and Administrative Employees.
The Administrative Policy provides hiring authorities with as much flexibility as possible while maintaining a structured process for recruitment strategies and staffing decisions. The Administrative Policy describes in detail the procedures to be followed in searches for tenure-track and tenured faculty, as well as searches for academic personnel at other levels. The Administrative Policy offers insights on recruitment, diversity and affirmative action, and detailed instruction regarding search documentation, record keeping, interviewing and recruitment.
Faculty positions should be designed and searches carried out in a manner that attracts a large and diverse pool of highly qualified applicants and leads to outstanding appointments. The guidelines described in this memo are intended to help search committees and units achieve this objective.
The University of Minnesota is committed to achieving excellence through diversity, and to fostering an environment that is diverse, humane and hospitable for faculty, staff and students. In support of the University’s commitment, the College of Liberal Arts promotes and supports diversity in its employment policies and practices, and advocates and practices affirmative action in recruitment and search processes to enhance diverse participation.
EOAA and Effective Searches: Guidance for search committees and hiring authorities articulates the underlying reasons for the University’s search procedures, defines the functions of search committees and hiring authorities, identifies important recruiting considerations, and offers valuable guidance on evaluating candidates. EOAA and Effective Searches should be read as a companion document to the University's Guidelines.
