Research Fellowship Supplement

Questions regarding the College of Liberal Arts Research Fellowship Supplement program should be directed to the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty, 612-624-9839.

Purpose

CLA Research Fellowship Supplements provide development leave opportunities to faculty in the College of Liberal Arts beyond those afforded by the University's sabbatical leave or single semester leave programs. Research Fellowship Supplements (CLARFS) are intended to support CLA faculty members who have received distinguished research fellowships, making it possible for them to accept such awards without suffering major reductions in salary.

Eligibility

  • Regular tenure-track or tenured CLA faculty who have been awarded competitive and prestigious research fellowships may apply for a CLA Research Fellowship Supplement, subject to approval and recommendation of the unit chair/director.
  • Qualifying fellowships must be of at least four months duration. Qualifying fellowships include many awarded by the Fulbright program, the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Arts, Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Humanities, the Social Science Research Council, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
  • Qualifying fellowships also may include major residencies at such centers as the National Humanities Center, Institutes for Advanced Study (e.g., Princeton; The Netherlands; Berlin), Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Institutes, the Woodrow Wilson International Center.
  • Regular faculty in the College of Liberal Arts are eligible for a CLA Research Fellowship once every three years.

Terms and Conditions

  • CLA Research Fellowship Supplements provide supplemental salary, up to 50% of the academic-year, B-term, base salary, but not exceeding a total of 100% of the academic-year base salary when combined with the fellowship and any other funding which will support the faculty member’s salary during the period of the CLARFS.
  • CLA Research Fellowship Supplements will not provide funding in an amount greater than the amount provided by the fellowship.
  • The CLA Research Fellowship Supplement may not be held concurrently with a sabbatical leave or a single semester leave.
  • CLA Research Fellowship Supplements may not be used to provide summer support.
  • The supplement will be paid from the faculty member's existing salary and fringe-benefit line items in the department budget.
  • The faculty member will be relieved of all regular department, college, and university duties during the period covered by the CLARFS.
  • The faculty member agrees to be engaged full-time in the research or creative project supported by the fellowship. University-approved consulting activities may continue, so long as they do not conflict with the terms and purposes of the fellowship.
  • The faculty member agrees to return to full-time University service for a period at least as long as the period covered by the CLARFS. Faculty members who do not return, or return for only a portion of the time due, and have not been granted a written waiver must reimburse the University for all or a prorated amount of the salary, retirement contributions, and value of benefits received during the leave.
  • The faculty member agrees to submit a brief report on the fellowship activities within three months of returning to University service.

Appointment and Benefits

  • CLA Research Fellowship Supplements shall correspond to B-term appointment periods (fall semester, spring semester, nine-month academic year). During the period covered by a CLARFS the faculty member will be placed on a research leave (paid-leave-of-absence).
  • If the external fellowship funding is administered by the University’s Sponsored Projects Administration, the faculty member’s paid appointment at the University of Minnesota will be maintained at 100%-time for the period covered by the CLARFS; at 100%-time, University-sponsored medical insurance, dental insurance, and life insurance will be maintained.
  • If the external fellowship funding is not administered by the University’s Sponsored Projects Administration and the external fellowship funding provides 50% or less of the faculty member’s B-term base salary, the faculty member’s paid appointment at the University of Minnesota will be reduced to 50%-time for the period covered by the CLARFS; at 50%-time, University-sponsored  medical insurance, dental insurance, and life insurance will be maintained.
  • If the external fellowship funding is not administered by the University’s Sponsored Projects Administration and the external fellowship funding provides more than 50% of the faculty member’s B-term base salary, the faculty member’s paid appointment at the University of Minnesota will be reduced to less than 50%-time; at less than 50%-time, the faculty member will be responsible for the full cost of University-sponsored medical insurance, dental insurance, and life insurance, as well as any optional insurance coverages the faculty member has elected.
  • Faculty on a partially paid or unpaid leave of absence (including a CLARFS) may may apply for retirement benefits for the unpaid portion of the leave as provided by the University's policy Retirement Benefits During Unpaid Leave.

Applications

Applications for CLA Research Fellowship Supplements are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Applications must include the application form and all required attachments.

Required Attachments

  • Statement of support from the unit head (chair or director). The statement of support should include details on the financial support requested for the fellowship and address the unit’s plans for covering instructional needs and other duties during the faculty member’s absence.
  • Copies of all relevant supporting documentation from the funding agency, including dates the fellowship will be held, locations, and all funding support provided.

Reporting

Faculty are required to submit a report on their fellowship activities within three months after returning to full-time University service. The report should briefly summarize the activities and accomplishments during the fellowship and should indicate how the fellowship can be expected to enhance the faculty member's future scholarly or creative work, teaching, or outreach activities.
