March/April 2008
Associate Dean for Faculty and Research
- Begins promotion & tenure cycle for 2008/09.
- Requests identification of probationary faculty expected to be considered for promotion and tenure in 2008/09, as well as tenured faculty who may be considered for promotion to professor.
- Conducts informational meeting concerning promotion and tenure matters for probationary (tenure-track) faculty and tenured faculty. A separate meeting is held for chairs/directors and administrators/HR contacts who support the promotion and tenure process at the unit-level.
Units
- Identify probationary faculty expected to be considered for promotion and tenure in the following year and tenured faculty who may be considered for promotion to professor.
- Identify faculty advisors for promotion and tenure cases.
- Identify external evaluators and begin assembling materials for their review.
May 2008

- Begin assembling promotion and tenure dossiers; send materials to external evaluators.
Summer 2008
Units
- Materials in the hands of external evaluators.
- Continue assembling promotion and tenure dossiers.
Senior Vice President and Provost
- Notifies CLA of probationary faculty in their decision year.
- Provides schedule for promotion and tenure recommendations, annual appraisals of probationary faculty, and non-reappointment recommendations.
September 2008
Associate Dean for Faculty and Research
- Provides information regarding the annual appraisal process for probationary faculty to chairs/directors.
- Confirms deadlines for promotion and tenure dossiers, annual appraisals, and recommendations for non-reappointment.
October 2008
Units
- Conduct tenure meeting, prepare recommendations, finalize promotion and tenure dossiers.
- Submit promotion and tenure dossiers to the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, 212 Johnston Hall, no later than Friday, 17 October 2008.
October/November 2008
Associate Dean for Faculty and Research
- Reviews promotion and tenure dossiers for completeness, forwards dossiers to CLA Promotion and Tenure Committee.
November/December 2008
CLA Promotion & Tenure Committee
- Reads dossiers, discusses and votes on cases, prepares recommendations to CLA.
January/February 2009
Dean and Associate Deans
- Read dossiers, meet to discuss cases, review CLA Promotion and Tenure Committee recommendations, prepare collegiate recommendations.
January 2009
Units
- Annual Appraisals of Probationary Faculty forms due in the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty and Research no later than Friday, 23 January 2009. (Recommendations for continuation or non-reappointment of probationary faculty.)
February 2009
Dean
- Submits collegiate recommendations and copies of promotion and tenure dossiers to the Senior Vice President and Provost.
- Notifies chairs/directors of collegiate recommendations.
March 2009
Associate Dean for Faculty and Research
- Reviews Annual Appraisals of Probationary Faculty, prepares collegiate recommendations, submits appraisals to Senior Vice President and Provost.
Mid-March 2009
- Deadline for submission to Senior Vice President and Provost of any additional materials for consideration in promotion and tenure review process.
April 2009
Senior Vice President for Academic Programs and Provost
- Notifies candidates and CLA Dean of promotion and tenure recommendations.
- Presents recommendations to Board of Regents.
- Takes action on Annual Appraisals of Probationary Faculty.
Dean
- Notifies candidates and units of Senior Vice President and Provost’s recommendations.
May 2009
Board of Regents
- Takes action on Senior Vice President and Provost’s recommendations.
- Notifies candidates of promotion and tenure decisions.
