Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz
Faculty Exchange 2008/09 – 2009/10

Call for Applications

The College of Liberal Arts welcomes applications from CLA faculty interested in teaching at the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz in either fall or spring semester of academic year 2008/09 or 2009/10.  CLA faculty who participate in the program will receive their regular compensation from CLA, and one participating CLA faculty member each year will receive an additional stipend in the EURO equivalent of $10,000 from Graz to defray the cost of living abroad.

The College will submit a maximum of three applications to the University of Graz for review for the exchange with the additional stipend. Final selection of the faculty member for the exchange rests with the University of Graz. Simple bilateral exchanges of faculty between departments in CLA and in Graz, without the additional stipend, are also possible.

Interested faculty should send a letter expressing interest in participating in the exchange, a curriculum vitae, and a one-page statement outlining teaching and research plans for the semester in Graz to Professor Gary Cohen, Center for Austrian Studies, 314 Social Sciences Building. The deadline for receipt of applications is October 15, 2007. For further information about the University of Graz, see: www.kfunigraz.ac.at/homepage.html

General Information

There are two faculty exchange opportunities with the Karl-Franzens Universität, Graz.

Track One. Each participating faculty member will receive her/his home salary plus a stipend from the host institution of $10,000 (or the equivalent in EUROs) for living expenses for a one-semester exchange. Only one faculty member from each side may participate in the Track One exchange each year. Faculty interested in the Track One exchange must apply no later than October 15 of the year preceding the exchange.  The application must be endorsed by the applicant's home department.

Applications will be reviewed by the exchange coordinator at the home institution (the College of Liberal Arts Associate Dean for Faculty and Research at Minnesota) and the Director of the Center for Austrian Studies. No more than three applications for the Track One faculty exchange will be forwarded each year to Graz. A selection committee at the University of Graz will make the final selection of the Minnesota faculty member for the next academic year’s exchange.  Faculty members exchanged on TRACK ONE will be expected to teach in Graz six hours per week either in English or German.

Track Two. Faculty exchanges will also function as direct bilateral agreements between individual CLA departments and their counterparts in Graz to make direct exchanges of faculty for one-semester visits at the other institution. Under Track Two, faculty members exchanged will be paid the normal salary from the home institution along with the minimum payment for instruction mandated in Graz of €4,000 for a maximum six hour per week teaching load or $5,000 for two courses (6 hours) on the Twin Cities campus. Arrangements for exchanges of faculty under Track Two should be made no later than December 1 of the academic year preceding the year when the exchange will take place.

There is no limit on the number of bilateral exchanges under Track Two which can take place each year. For purposes of scheduling, the Minnesota department and its counterpart in Graz are asked to notify the faculty exchange coordinators at the University of Minnesota/CLA (Associate Dean for Faculty and Research) and the KFUG (Vice-Rector Roberta Maierhofer), respectively, of the agreement to exchange faculty by December 1 in the year preceding the academic year in which the exchange will take place. Screening of applications for the Track Two exchanges will take place at the department level only.
