Summer Research Support

Effective summer 2008, the use of research support funds provided by the College or University for faculty summer salary is subject to the discretionary approval of the chair of the department and the associate dean for faculty of the college. This requirement applies to summer support taken from internal research funds provided by the College and University where faculty have been instructed that they may use these funds to provide various kinds of research support, including summer research support. Prior approval is not required for summer support provided by external grants or funds specifically designated for summer salary.

This practice has been instituted because of the potential for tax liability issues that may arise when faculty have the option to use research funds for summer salary. When a faculty member has sole discretion on whether to use a portion of research funds for summer salary, the faculty member may be deemed to be in "constructive receipt of income," thereby subjecting the entire research allocation to taxation, whether the funds are used for summer salary or some other purpose. The application/approval process removes the "constructive receipt of income" issue and has been endorsed by the University's Tax Management Office.

One-month of summer research salary is equivalent to one-ninth of the B-term base salary for the immediately preceding year, plus corresponding fringe.  No more than two months of summer research salary may be drawn per summer from all sources.

Requests for summer research support should be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty at least one month prior to the start of the pay period desired for the summer support.
