Instructions For Proposing New CLA Courses

New course proposals are reviewed by the college's Course Review Committee and the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs. In order to ensure a complete and thorough review, the Committee asks that proposals be submitted according to the following instructions:

1. Fill out the online CLA Course Proposal Form.

2. Course information must also be entered into the Electronic Course Authorization System (ECAS).

3. If the course is designed to meet any of the Twin Cities liberal education requirements, and/or writing intensive, complete the appropriate portion in ECAS. Please include a course syllabus with your course proposal submission. You will find detailed descriptions of both the liberal education and writing intensive requirements at: http://www1.umn.edu/usenate/committees/cle.html. A course must first be approved by the college before it will be submitted to the Council on Liberal Education for review.

Indicate reason if requesting variable credits.

5. Number of contact hours

Give a detailed explanation if proposing more or less contact hours than required by standard University policies; i.e. 1 credit equals 1 contact hour.  A writing intensive course should not have fewer contact hours without a compelling reason.

6. Effective date

The first semester the course will be offered, e.g., fall 2005.

7. Semester prerequisites

Courses and/or criteria necessary prior to beginning the course

8. Highest level of consent required

e.g., department or instructor permission

9. Course description

350 characters maximum

10. Grading basis

A/F only or S/N only or Student Option

11. Multiple designators or cross-listing

Proposing units must make a compelling case on programmatic grounds that multiple designators are necessary.

12. Evaluation standards and workload

How will students be evaluated in this course?
What is the expected student workload?

13. Multiple level courses (e.g. 1xxx/3xxx, 3xxx/5xxx) 

If this course will be a multiple level offering, please include the following:

  • Why is it necessary to offer this course at more than one level?
  • How will course requirements and evaluation standards for students registered at different levels be differentiated?

14. Graduate student workload for 4xxx and 5xxx courses

If this is a 4xxx or 5xxx level course, please specifically describe how the evaluation standards and workloads will differ for undergraduate and graduate students.

15. Objectives and topics

Please describe the objectives of the course and the main topics or themes that will be covered.

16. Honors

Is this an Honors course or will there be an Honors section for this course?

17. Liberal Education requirement or Writing Intensive

Indicate the specific liberal education(s) requirement(s) this course will meet and if it will be writing intensive.

18. Schedule of course offering

How frequently will the course be offered?
Is this course primarily intended for College of Continuing Education students or through Summer Session or May Term?

19. Class size and format

Please include the expected enrollment number and describe the mode of instruction (lecture, discussion, directed study etc.). Will there be any learning technology applications?

20. Primary and other faculty who will teach the course

Please include full name, phone number and e-mail address

21. Bibliography

Please include a representative bibliography of up to 10 items, in appropriate style.

22. Strategic Objectives

Please answer the following:

  • How does adding this course improve the overall curricular objectives of the unit?
  • Does the unit consider this course to be part of its core curriculum?

23. Consultation with other units

In order to prevent course overlap and to inform other departments of new curriculum, circulate proposal to chairs in relevant units and follow-up with direct consultation. Please summarize response from units consulted and include correspondence.
